PTA Association Meeting SUMMARY

(April 12, 2017)

RECOGNITIONS –  THANK YOU!

  • Karla, Mary, Alberto and Dory for the yearbook

GUEST SPEAKER

  • Ms. Tong, our computer teacher, spoke about STEM@Lafayette
  • The presentation spoke about where we are and where we want to be with our computer science curriculum
  • Our current goal is to have a 1:2 device to student ratio. This goal will be met by the summer when additional iPads are ordered in July.
  • 3D printer has been funded through a grant
  • Lafayette has been selected to a be a part of SFUSD’s computer science pilot program
  • Currently working on various types of engineering in 6 classrooms
  • Working on tech integration in the classrooms vs the computer lab
  • Would eventually like to transform the computer lab to a Makers Space Innovation Lab

FINANCIAL REPORT

  • Covered the period from March 1, 2017 – March 31, 2017
  • Income received for this period was from the Annual Give Campaign, Spell-a-thon and yearbook sales.
  • Expenses included the spring play,  the band for the Blue Ribbon ceremony, hospitality, teacher grants and field trips

COMMITTEE UPDATES

  • Membership
    • 423 members
    • Classes with the highest participation and winners of the bagel breakfast are: K: Iwaszewicz, 1st grade: Chue, 2nd grade: McClain, 3rd grade: Steinberg, 4th grade: Brook, 5th grade: Welsh
  • Annual Give Campaign
    • raised a total of $115,229.00 to date
    • 44% participation
    • Celebratory movie night will be held on 4/29 at 6:30pm
    • Students are voting on which movie to watch
  • Sing-A-Long
    • Will take place on April 15th
    • TIME CHANGE: Doors open at 6:00pm, Pre-Show at 6:10pm, Movie starts at 6:20pm
    • Tickets still available online but can be purchased at the door with CASH ONLY
    • Raffle winners will be announced during the pre-show

PRINCIPAL’S REMARKS (PROVIDED BY HALIMA)

  • Inclusion week will take place from 4/17 – 4/21
    • Please encourage discussions with your children regarding the message that Mr. Caceres sent in his email with the Wednesday e-Envelope on 4/12
    • Questions to help facilitate the conversation can be found in the Wednesday Bulletin
      • These questions reflect what will be discussed by teachers with their students during inclusion week
  • The school district will be providing Lafayette with an art teacher for our 3rd graders during the 2017-2018 school year
    • K-2 will have Art in Action – taught by parent volunteers
    • 3rd graders will have an art teacher
    • 4th-5th graders will have artist in residence
  • Cassava Restaurant has asked to use the school yard as a parking lot for Saturday’s Farmer’s Market’s.
    • Mr. Caceres is looking into how much it will cost to rent the school yard
    • The PTA will be receiving a portion of the money made from the parking lot
    • The PTA president is working with the restaurant owner and Mr. Caceres on the details of putting this together
  • Our school social worker will be moving to a 0.8 position next year which will cost $25K vs the $46K required for a full time position. This is a much more feasible option for the PTA now that the requested computers have been funded. The issue will be further discussed during our preliminary budget meeting.

PTA BYLAWS

  • Our PTA bylaws have been updated (as required every 3 years by the National PTA)
    • The only amended item is regarding our quorums for association and executive board meetings (the minimum number of members required to conduct business)
    • The new bylaws were voted on and approved by the association
  • Halima highlighted the following Standing Rules of our PTA BYLAWS: “Room Parents are part of the PTA Board and as such must be PTA members and the use of PTA protected information by any member of the PTA Board for non- PTA business is prohibited. “

ELECTIONS

  • It’s official! Elections took place and the newly elected 2017-2018 candidates are:
    • President: Chris Smith
    • Financial Secretary: Veronica Mata
    • VP Membership: Ellie Denise
    • Historian: Halima Thorsen
    • VP Operations: Valerie Vitullo
    • VP Hospitality: Kristy Kaule (Kristy ran from the floor during our meeting and all were in favor of voting for her)

YMCA SPEAKER

  • Frankie, YMCA Site Coordinator at Lafayette, spoke about the YMCA and what they have to offer
  • K-3 aftercare is held on-site
  • LEAP Extension Program – 4th & 5th graders from Lafayette and Argonne Elementary meet and work together at the YMCA Argonne Clubhouse

OPEN COMMITTEE POSITIONS – WE NEED YOU!!

  • The following committees have open chair positions which have an IMMEDIATE NEED to be filled for the upcoming school year.
    • Stop, Drop and Go Chair
    • Spirit Wear Chair
    • Art in Action Co-Chair

  • Currently Happening: Smarter Balanced Assessment Testing
  • 4/12: Raffle ends – hardcopies only. Raffle tickets will continue to be sold online through Friday 4/14
  • 4/15: Sing-a-Long Fundraiser
  • 4/17 – 4/21: Lafayette Inclusion Week
  • 4/28: Spirit Friday
  • 4/29: Annual Give Campaign Family Movie Night
  • 5/1 – 5/5: Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week
  • 5/5: Teacher/Staff Appreciation Luncheon
  • 5/10: Last PTA meeting of the 2016-2017 school year
    • Guest speaker will be from Common Sense Media
    • Preliminary budget for the 2017-2018 school year will be discussed
    • Recognition of two teachers who were nominated for teacher of the year
    • Say good-bye to 5th grade parents who will be moving on
  • 5/19: Field Day
