Halloween Parade & Carnival

description

In the morning, the entire school will go on a Halloween parade around the block to show off their costumes. Then, throughout the day each classroom will visit the auditorium, which will be transformed into a creepy Halloween haven, much to the delight of the kids. The kids will enjoy games, face painting, fortune telling, popcorn, and more treats. Interested in volunteering during the ghostly day of Halloween fun with the kids? Whether you have 30 minutes or a couple hours, any help is appreciated.

Estimated people needed: 25 people for anywhere from 2 hours to 8 hours, for favor assemblage, day before Halloween set up, and working game booths. Also need clean up people at the end of the carnival.

Different roles needed, including services: Chair will coordinate volunteer sign up for set up and manning of games, popcorn making, and assemblage of party favors. Party favors to be ordered and packaged in weeks before Halloween carnival (about 460 needed for all students). Halloween themed decorating to be purchased and set up the day before Halloween. We will optimally have eight people for set up. This includes game set up: mini-golf course, rubber rat toss, fishing for spooky for treasures, face painting. Also to set up popcorn popper. Voluminous disposable spider webs adorn auditorium. All reusable supplies are stored on site. Clean up to include removing all reusable items and toting to Lafayette basement which is actually scarier than the carnival decorations. Chair and volunteers optimally dress up, but not too scary.

Time commitment: Day before Halloween and day of Halloween about four and eight hours at school, respectively. Preceding coordinating, favor assemblage, errand running, approximately twelve to fifteen hours. Any number of volunteer participants anywhere from two to eight hours on day of set up and Halloween.

Back to School Night

Teachers host parents in their classrooms to set expectations and explain the curriculum for the upcoming year. It’s a great way to meet other parents and plan for volunteer and field trip opportunities.

Book Fair

The Book Fair not only raises money but also puts books in the hands of every student, brings the community together, and supplements each classroom’s collection and the school’s main library. For every Scholastic book sold, Lafayette receives a credit for free books.

Families and friends are invited to check out how Lafayette implements the California Science Standards through the Full Options Science Systems (FOSS) curriculum. Classes showcase their projects, investigations, and experiments that they have been learning in science throughout the year. During the week, you’ll see the various experiments and investigations displayed in the halls, and during one evening, students will formally present their work to families and the community.

Read-a-thon

In this annual fundraiser, students set reading time goals and ask sponsors to pledge money toward meeting those reading goals. All the funds collected in this event are used to support school programs.

Stop, Drop & Go

The award-winning Stop, Drop & Go program enables students to be dropped off safely in front of the school while keeping traffic and parking issues at a minimum. We greet about 150 families every morning and unload 8 to 10 cars per minute. The program’s success is due to the commitment and shared responsibility of all the parents at our school. Each classroom has two rotations scheduled each year.

See “Stop, Drop & Go” page for more details.
